What's usually like weather wise. We'll be making trips up and were wondering about roads, snow, ice, that kind of thing.

You normally will be fine snow-wise until mid-January. There might be some flurries before that, but rarely does it pour the snow until January and February. Even then, Morgantown is pretty good about clearing their roads, unless you're caught in a snowstorm in the afternoon or the evening. Then I would stay put until the roads are plowed unless you have 4WD as it's all hills. Unfortunately, they'll clear all the main roads but leave some of the side streets unplowed, so those who normally use shortcuts to avoid traffic are forced onto the main thorough fair. So while driving in the snow in Morgantown isn't bad, the traffic is still horrible, if not worse (plus thousands of college students who don't know how to drive well in the snow).

Thanks. I'm also wondering what 68 is like during the winter. Do they keep it pretty clear?

WV end, yes, MD, not so much, especially thru Siberia - er, Western MD. Trust me, I drive that road all too often, and can attest that MD used to do a decent job, but over the last 3~5 years there's been a few times that they've just not gotten the job done in a timely fashion. If you've got to go, check weather reports!

i HATE driving through Frostburg, MD! There have been times when the fog has been so bad that I have been absolutely scared to death and couldn't see 6 inches in front of my vehicle!

Thanks for the info. So far my driving in the area has been mostly late spring and summer, and the drive has always been pleasant. Had a feeling winter could be a little more of a challenge.

Quite the opposite, actually.

I agree. I don't know what's up with that area but it's funky. It's often incredibly foggy through there and it doesn't seem to lift until I'm almost at the WV line. I think there's a real weird "weather" area there. I used to attend Frostburg back in the day and we got a TON of snow there whereas WVU doesn't get nearly as much.

YMMV, I guess. MD has even admitted a lack of winter road supplies for their western counties over the past few years...

It's an extension of the "Potomac Highlands" - a geographic feature notorious for it's weather (why, I'm not sure). If you think Keyser's Ridge can get ugly, try driving thru Mt. Storm WV! Oh, and fog can be a problem any time of year - took a nephew in for orientation this summer & hit severe dense fog @ 6 PM!

68 was a real improvement, though - it was a 6 hour + drive from Morgantown to DC back in the day...
