Have the locks changed ASAP?

My husband and I are closing on our first home next Thursday, and I am thinking of what needs to be done immediately after closing.

What did you do?

Thanks!

I'm hopefully closing on a foreclosure the end of the month so I'd like hear tips too. Definitely change the locks. Get the utilities in your name.

I have already called the utilities, just waiting for the day to come.

Locks will be changed for sure!

Yes, get the locks changed. I had it done the 2nd day. You never know who really had access to the key. The best thing about my realtor is that she was hands off, she would let me go to the properties on my own and give me the codes to check out houses. Not ethical, I'm sure. But if she did it w/ me, I can only assume she did it with others.

We rented "The Money Pit" and cracked open a bottle of bubbly.

Probably not the advice you were looking for.....

Congrats on the new house!

I would make note of the meter reading (preferably take a picture) of the utiities to make sure you pay from that point forward on your next bill.

Definitely change the locks.

Sure, I scheduled it on the day of getting the keys. A few months later I found a set of the old keys in the front yard under a stepstone. You'd think they would have at least hid it in the backyard.

Congrats on the new house! When we closed we went right over to the new house, cracked a bottle of bubbly sat down & smiled. As for the locks....we didn't change them. We figured that if someone was stupid enough to try and enter our home without our permission, if one (or all) of our 4 dogs didn't get 'em, the 12 gauge shotgun would!
