Great ideas everyone!

I was thinking more along the lines of something you would show in an American history class to a bunch of immigrants who wish to become Americans and understand our country.

Kinda hard to know just what the OP wants.
The question is extremely open to interpretation.

are we looking for movies that portray America as great or just movies about American culture?

Well then, don't need to show newly arrived folks how to live by joining together in gangs for protection So here's a different list. During the 30's the country was going through the Great Depression and it affected all Americans in different ways. As ecvMatt recommended, The Grapes of Wrath looks at the conditions of people living on the great plains who lose their home due to economic conditions and the Dust Bowl environmental disaster. They travel to California and are exploited along the way. To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in a rural Alabama town and looks at the racial issues of the day as well as depression era issues. For a more modern look at the those times Kit Kittredge: An American Girl looks at a family who survives tough times by taking in boarders while father is away looking for work. This story is told from the young daughter's point of view.
