I think it should be a good choice.

I think so too!!!
Mary Todd had a colorful personality...I think Sally Field can definitely deliver the southern "hellcat" cacophony Mary was known to throw...to perfection.

I actually think she is a good choice for an older Mary Todd. And I think she is still able to play younger with camera tricks as she is aging very gracefully. She has the right physicality, she is not a tall swan but a bossy lil Southern gal I really think the physical size difference between tall skinny Abe and short round Mary is very important. I lost Bus Stop in college despite an excellent audition due to a shorter very talented actor. He had to overpower his Cheri! A petite woman(great actress too) a bit too old did the part but I had to concede when he threw her over his shoulder!
Sally Fields also has a very strong presence and we know she can do crazy(Sybill), I think it will be a memorable role for her.

Thanks for mentioning "Sybil..." I totally forgot all about that one. I'll download it for late night viewing.

Agreed - this could work. We think of her as perky/cute but she can drab down pretty convincingly (apologies to MTL) and be a serious spitfire.

Sally Field is an excellent actress and I feel she can pull just about any part off. My favorites of her films are "Norma Ray" and "Steel Magnolias"
