According to QT, the 1950's and the 1980's were the two worst decades for films.
looks like he has a problem with the censorship of the 50s and the 80s having to make their protagonists too "likable"
thoughts?
not sure about the 50s. In the 80s there were definitely plenty of great genre films but it seemed there weren't that many "prestige" type pictures so if those are your thing I can see you finding the 80s a bit lacking. Though I don't think that is the point he brings up

The Hays Code went into effect in 1934. Were the rest of the 30s and all of the 40s markedly less restricted with regards to film? I know society reached a nadir of Victorian-esque cultural stultification in the 50s, but films were rather neutered of anything at all suggestive for a long time before 1949 ended. I mean, Gone With The Wind had to file a special appeal to allow Rhett to say 'damn'. And World War II saw movies spring into full propaganda mode.
As for the 80s? Well, 70s cinema was a tough act to follow!
Tarantino has terminal HUA. The '70s were a tough (toughest) act to follow, but the '80s has plenty of great movies.

Yeah, I think reel for reel, the '90s were actually far a weaker decade for movies than the '80s, but Tarantino is hardly going to say that, since his movies started coming out in the '90s.
There were some great movies in the '90s. UNFORGIVEN, TOMBSTONE, L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, GOODFELLAS, CASINO, and SILENCE OF THE LAMBS all leaped to mind. But for the most part, '90s cinema was very bland. Mostly a lot of McMovies.

Tarantino is supposedly a big fan of Spaghetti westerns though. And its hard to compare eras because technology is different. The AFI list of best movies, most are from before 1990s.

'though'? Why the qualifier? The Spaghetti era began after the 50s and ended before the 80s.

Story, drama, and technical expertise all transcend technology. I recently rewatched Alien. Though very good for its time, it does show some limitations and datedness. That's fine. It's part of its charm, and it still is better than 99% of the science fiction that followed it, not because of the technology available but because of what it did with it.

The list was released in 1998 and updated in 2007. Either way (and still in 2021), most of cinematic history happened before 1990.
Two of my 5 favorite movies were Bus Stop in 1956, and Moonstruck in 1987. Both are classics. Both are probably the best films those stars ever made. If there's a bad decade for movies it's the current one. I have yet to see a single movie made in 2020 or 2021 that hasn't disappointed me.
I have often wondered if Tarantino is somewhere on the autism spectrum. I have no idea if he is or if he's ever been tested. But I have family members who are, and I see a lot of the signs in Tarantino's attitudes and mannerisms when he does interviews.
And if you believe the rumors, the guy smokes a ton of weed. In my experience, weed does one of two things to a guy: Either turns him into a really mellow duuude or turns him into a hyperactive a-hole.
