Anybody see this? We went yesterday mostly to get out of the house where we have been trapped due to the heat. It was mostly older people watching it and was set in 1965.

The acting was brilliant. The setting, not so much--for some reason I thought it was supposed to be an island off the coast of Maine but it's only Rhode Island. Rhode Island is okay but it's not what I was expecting.

The plot is interesting and holds your interest. A few parts were too stereotypical, like the social services being cold and wanting to institutionalize the boy. Near the end the movie flew out of control when it should have been coming to its climax and tying up loose ends--they are on the roof of a church and so much is happening and it's all so muddled and confusing that it's hard to follow. You know what must be happening because it's stereotypical and predictable but still, you want to follow along with it and be emotionally involved.

I think they got 1965 exactly right with the clothing and interiors. I'm not usually into fantasy type movies, I like realism but this one did have a message and for a new movie, it wasn't that bad. Senior discount helps.

Anyone else see this? Any other decent movies you can recommend? The one about the Marigold Hotel is supposed to be pretty good. I'm not into Netflix or watching movies on the computer--wanting to get OUT and see something new.

Good thread! I'm also interested in hearing reviews about the Marigold Hotel movie.

One movie about retirement communities that we found interesting is the Boynton Beach Club. It's fiction, but lots of little details rang true. The plot follows men and women in a 55+ community and how they pick up the pieces of their lives and look for new love after the loss of their mates. An interesting sub plot is about a resident of the community who accidentally kills another resident (car accident) and then has to deal with living in the community.

Hurry up and go see the Marigold Hotel movie...I have a feeling it won't be around much longer.

Thank you LibraGirl123 about Marigold Hotel; understand (Dame) Judy Dench is going to a lot to learn her lines-losing vision? ! So enjoy her and her performances.

Caladium, thank you for the suggestion; can one rent it? Like NewEngland, usually go out to movies, when I do see them.

Boynton Beach Club is a movie you can definitely rent. If you have Netflix I think it's one of the ones you can download, too.

Another interesting movie about retirement is About Schmidt. It's kind of depressing in places, though, so be forewarned. I found it interesting, but I'm not completely sure I'd recommend it.

There's a movie about a person who's retiring and letting go of a family property in St. Augustine. I only vaguely remember it. Does anyone know which movie I'm talking about and its name?

My wife and I saw Moonrise Kingdom and thought it simply didn't live up to the hype. For us...it was mediocre. Like some other movies in theaters (I sound like an old person here...), we found ourselves having to put our fingers in our ears at times...that blasted music was so loud in places.

We also saw The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and enjoyed it a lot more than Moonrise. I wouldn't put it in a category for best picture nominees or anything like that...but we were properly entertained by it.

Smile Moonrise...

We saw it. My husband wants to see a movie every weekend. (Groan). Anyway, I'm a bit more selective.

He loved it - he really remembers his growing up years and talks about them and felt it was true to form. My neighborhood was more like SandLot so a little different there. I agree about the hype. I kind of was waiting for "something" to happen but it wasn't bad. It was just a bit tamer than I thought it would be and that's OK too.

Keep in mind this was the same opening weekend as Magic Mike, Ted, a bunch of them and our theatres were packed! (We've seen Ted - funny - and we saw Peace, Love and Misunderstanding which was better than I thought it would be).

He keeps talking about To Rome with Love and I've heard mixed reviews. (I still want to see Magic Mike though).

The Marigold one we didn't get to see but didn't hear enough about it. There's one coming out with Meryl Streep in a few weeks - how can she have looked so good in The Devil Wears Prada and look so dumpy in this new one? Not sure but I'm looking forward to seeing that one

I have not heard one word about Magic Mike! I mean, I've seen posts on FB from friends who are going to see it, and then I never see anything afterward. So do you think it doesn't live up to the hype?

I've gone to see a couple movies lately with my 30-something son. He likes all that super-hero stuff so I had to go see The Avengers. It was mildly entertaining. I thought The Hunger Games was an interesting concept, but too long and sappy. Last week, we went to see "Ted" (only so I didn't have to go see another super-hero flick). It was gross but humorous, and he, being a "Family Guy" fan, loved it.

which one are you referring to with Meryl Streep? Hope Springs looks fun with Tommy Lee Jones, but she's also got another coming out soon after called Sage Hill, I think.

The first one comes out early august (the 10th?) God it looks hilarious.
