Episode VII is getting all this hype that it's going to be the return to the old movies in terms of quality and story telling. They got JJ Abrams, all the old mummies from the original trilogy including Harrison "Hobble" Ford.

I think it's going to be better than 1-3, but a far step below 3-6.

Its got a pretty good cast as far as I can tell. However, I hope they dont ruin it with over done CGI and terrible plot lines

Why do I have this feeling that Star Wars Episode VII is going to suck? (cast, terrible)
Probably because besides tv's Alias and Lost, J.J. Abrams has essentially put out crap.

But let's look at his film and television work as writer imdb(and my comments are in red and the bold red are his projects that I liked).

As Writer:

Fringe (TV Series) (created by - 100 episodes, 2008 - 2013) (written by - 6 episodes, 2008 - 2009)
- An Enemy of Fate (2013) ... (created by)
- Liberty (2013) ... (created by)
- The Boy Must Live (2013) ... (created by)
- Anomaly XB-6783746 (2012) ... (created by)
- Black Blotter (2012) ... (created by)
Show all 100 episodes

I've seen a few episodes of this, and it looked average.

Undercovers (TV Series) (created by - 13 episodes, 2010 - 2012) (written by - 3 episodes, 2010)
- The Reason (2012) ... (created by)
- Dark Cover (2012) ... (created by)
- The Key to It All (2010) ... (created by)
- Funny Money (2010) ... (created by)
- A Night to Forget (2010) ... (created by)
Show all 13 episodes

It was so-so, but I was waiting for it to get better and reveal it's mysteries, but it got cancelled.

2011 Super 8 (written by)

This was so-so, but it reminded me of some of the childhood movies that Steven Spielberg started to produce and direct after he became famous.

Lost (TV Series) (1 episode, 2010) (created by - 115 episodes, 2004 - 2010) (teleplay - 3 episodes, 2004 - 2006) (story - 2 episodes, 2004)
- Epilogue: The New Man in Charge (2010) ... (creator)
- The End (2010) ... (created by)
- What They Died For (2010) ... (created by)
- Across the Sea (2010) ... (created by)
- The Candidate (2010) ... (created by)
Show all 118 episodes

I'll say that the first three seasons were rock solid, and I think that this is one of the reasons why Abrams got Star Wars, but after that the show changed.

2008 Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead (Video) (characters)

Never heard of.

2008 Lost: Via Domus (Video Game) (creator)

Never heard of.

2008 Lost: Missing Pieces (TV Mini-Series) (teleplay - 1 episode)
- The Envelope (2008) ... (teleplay)

Never heard of.

2006 Avatar: The Last Airbender (TV Series) (1 episode)
- The Drill (2006) ... (uncredited)

Never heard of.

Alias (TV Series) (created by - 105 episodes, 2001 - 2006) (written by - 13 episodes, 2001 - 2005)
- Reprisal (2006) ... (created by)
- All the Time in the World (2006) ... (created by)
- No Hard Feelings (2006) ... (created by)
- I See Dead People (2006) ... (created by)
- 30 Seconds (2006) ... (created by)
Show all 105 episodes

The first two seasons were totally brilliant, and I think that this is one of the reasons why Abrams got Star Wars. Subsequent seasons were still good and watchable, but the final season where Jennifer Garner was gone for maternity leave for most of the season was really weak. But that could have only been expected.

2006 Mission: Impossible III (written by)

I didn't like this as much as I thought that I would.

2005 The Catch (TV Movie) (creator)

Never heard of.

2004 Alias (Video Game) (creator)

Never heard of.

Felicity (TV Series) (created by - 84 episodes, 1998 - 2002) (written by - 17 episodes, 1998 - 2001)
- Felicity Interrupted (2002) ... (created by)
- Back to the Future (2002) ... (created by)
- Spin the Bottle (2002) ... (created by)
- The Power of the Ex (2002) ... (created by)
- Time Will Tell (2002) ... (created by)
Show all 84 episodes

Never watched, but I heard it wasn't bad.

2001 Joy Ride (written by)

Never heard of.

1998 Armageddon (screenplay)

This wasn't bad, although, I liked Deep Impact better.

1997 Gone Fishin' (written by - as Jeffrey Abrams)

Never heard of.

1992 Forever Young (written by - as Jeffrey Abrams)

Never saw, but now I'm curious about seeing it.

1991 Regarding Henry (written by - as Jeffrey Abrams)

Newer saw, but it seemed like a successful movie.

1990 Taking Care of Business (written by - as Jeffrey Abrams)

Never heard of.

J.J. Abrams - IMDb

Although, I'm hoping that J.J. feels like he has something to prove(kind of like I think that Bryan Singer felt with the new X-Men movie) and accesses some of that good Alias and Lost creativity.

P.S. Also, his director projects are very similar to his writing projects.

This is Abrams' work as a producer from imdb.(My comments are in red and the bold red are his projects that I liked.)

2012-2014 Revolution (TV Series) (executive producer - 35 episodes)
- Declaration of Independence (2014) ... (executive producer)
- Memorial Day (2014) ... (executive producer)
- Tomorrowland (2014) ... (executive producer)
- S#!& Happens (2014) ... (executive producer)
- Why We Fight (2014) ... (executive producer)
Show all 35 episodes

I tried watching a few episodes, but didn't like it. Also, I understand that it got canceled.

2011-2014 Person of Interest (TV Series) (executive producer - 68 episodes)
- Deus Ex Machina (2014) ... (executive producer)
- A House Divided (2014) ... (executive producer)
- Beta (2014) ... (executive producer)
- Death Benefit (2014) ... (executive producer)
- Most Likely to... (2014) ... (executive producer)
Show all 68 episodes

This is one of J.J.'s quality projects that he was involved in and which is probably one of the reasons he got Star Wars.

2014 Believe (TV Series) (executive producer - 5 episodes)
- Sinking (2014) ... (executive producer)
- White Noise (2014) ... (executive producer)
- Defection (2014) ... (executive producer)
- Beginner's Luck (2014) ... (executive producer)
- Pilot (2014) ... (executive producer)

I watched the pilot episode, and it seemed 'average' but I don't know how they could make this into a weekly series.

2013-2014 Almost Human (TV Series) (executive producer - 14 episodes)
- Straw Man (2014) ... (executive producer)
- Beholder (2014) ... (executive producer)
- Disrupt (2014) ... (executive producer)
- Perception (2014) ... (executive producer)
- Unbound (2014) ... (executive producer)
Show all 14 episodes

I liked it, but it was that dumb music(which I meant to post about in the TV thread, but forgot) that I think killed that show.

2014 Infinitely Polar Bear (executive producer)

Never saw.

2013 Kre-O Star Trek (Short) (producer)

Never saw.

2013 Star Trek Into Darkness (producer)

It was so-so, but what I didn't like most about it was it being a rehash of "The Wrath of Khan" and using a white English actor to play a specifically Indian character. Also, I hope the rest of Abrams' Star Trek movies aren't alternate universe versions of more previous Star Trek movies and more Classic Star Trek tv episodes.

2008-2013 Fringe (TV Series) (executive producer - 100 episodes)
- An Enemy of Fate (2013) ... (executive producer)
- Liberty (2013) ... (executive producer)
- The Boy Must Live (2013) ... (executive producer)
- Anomaly XB-6783746 (2012) ... (executive producer)
- Black Blotter (2012) ... (executive producer)
Show all 100 episodes

I've seen a few episodes of this, and it looked average.

2012 Alcatraz (TV Series) (executive producer - 13 episodes)
- Tommy Madsen (2012) ... (executive producer)
- Garrett Stillman (2012) ... (executive producer)
- Webb Porter (2012) ... (executive producer)
- Sonny Burnett (2012) ... (executive producer)
- The Ames Bros. (2012) ... (executive producer)

2010-2012 Undercovers (TV Series) (executive producer - 13 episodes)
- The Reason (2012) ... (executive producer)

- The Key to It All (2010) ... (executive producer)
- Funny Money (2010) ... (executive producer)
- A Night to Forget (2010) ... (executive producer)
Show all 13 episodes

Never heard of.

2012 Shelter (TV Movie) (executive producer)

Never heard of.

2011 Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (producer)

Besides Alias and Lost, this is one of the best things that I've seen Abrams involved in. Fabulous!

2011 Super 8 (producer)

This was so-so, but it reminded me of some of the childhood movies that Steven Spielberg started to produce and direct after he became famous.

2010 Morning Glory (producer)

Never heard of.

2004-2010 Lost (TV Series) (executive producer - 115 episodes)
- The End (2010) ... (executive producer)
- What They Died For (2010) ... (executive producer)
- Across the Sea (2010) ... (executive producer)
- The Candidate (2010) ... (executive producer)
- The Last Recruit (2010) ... (executive producer)
Show all 115 episodes

I'll say that the first three seasons were rock solid, but after that the show changed.
Also, this is probably one of the reasons he got Star Wars.

2009 The People Speak (Documentary) (co-producer)

Never heard of.

2009 Star Trek: D·A·C (Video Game) (executive producer: Bad Robot Interactive - as Jeffrey Jacob Abrams)

Never heard of.

2009 Star Trek (producer)

It was okay, but I was hoping for something better with the sequel, which I really didn't get.

2009 Anatomy of Hope (TV Movie) (executive producer)

2007-2008 Lost: Missing Pieces (TV Mini-Series) (executive producer - 13 episodes)

Lots of reasons.

A) Everything sucks these days. Creativity is completely dead...which is why they are piling odd unneeded sequels in the first place instead of searching through scripts to find the next great original trilogy.

B) The series itself is so dumbed down and commercialized from the first 2-3 (return of the Jedi was hybrid...still had original series quality but with fighting teddy bears) that we can't expect anything aimed at adults, or even particularly bright children.

C) The last three were the product of a man who, in his old age, seems to have grown cynical, insular, overly political, and fond of drinking his own bath water. I understand that he is not going to be so involved in these, but really, I think we all remember that sinking feeling that we had the first time we watched episode I, and it just kept getting worse, and worse.

Jar-Jar Binks...that odd Pedophilia between Anikin and the Princess...the force is a bacteria...boring as hell Ben-Hur rip-off chariot race...a Jedi who says things like "I didn't come here to free slaves,"... more politics than any given three hours of C-Span...Samuel Jackson tragically miscast as a mother f------ Jedi Knight....a fight no one cared about between robots and frogs....a horribly miscast Anikin (what, Haley Joel Osmunt was unavailable?)....truly awful film on every level.

I honestly hate George Lucas as this point, a man who I once regarded as something like a saint or a prophet.

Tom! You da man! Thanks for the indepth review of JJ Abrams career. This sort of solidifies my thoughts about Abrams, he's not exactly the kind of guy who will do Star Wars justice. Just because he was able to reboot Star Trek (which was a very low bar), doesn't mean he can hit the heights of the Original SW trilogy.

LOL

I also forgot older Anakin saying, "If you're not with me, then you're my enemy!" Yes, Lucas became very political in his older age.

Agreed.
