I would have been happier had they just used a different ship/crew or something to tell the story.

I liked Abrams' first Star Trek movie. I certainly had my quibbles with it. Even Captain Kirk has too much class to like the Beastie Boys, and the narrative was way too heavy-handed with "time travel changes the future." We got it the first nine times, but they kept saying it over and over and over. But other than that, I enjoyed it.
The second Abrams Trek movie ... yeah, I didn't feel so much slapped in the face as given the finger. They cast a great actor like Benedict Cumberbatch, then wrote him a role that ruined an iconic character. They did cheap imitations of very moving scenes from other movies. And here they had an opportunity to truly do a "reset," but they kept going back to old stuff. The monologue needs to close off with: "... to boldly go where we've already been before, but without any of the pathos but a lot more special effects!"
Abrams is a very talented director. As a writer, he is very hit and miss. Since Lawrence Kasdan was the primary scribe on the new Star Wars flick, I'm hoping it will be awesome. I've certainly been very impressed with everything I've seen so far.
