Awesome movie and highly recommended! I really enjoyed it from beginning to end. I thought it was much better than Cloverfield, and it seemed to have less hand held cam shots for those concerned.
I've read of several complaints from people in regards to the ties between this movie and the original Cloverfield. If you don't want spoilers then don't read further.
10 Cloverfield Lane is not a direct sequel to Cloverfield, and the original monster is not in the movie. The only ties between the two are a few small references in the movie, and the overall theme of an invasion of earth by alien life forms.
Some people who saw the movie were disappointed it wasn't a direct sequel and were probably expecting a non stop action fest featuring monster battles galore from start to end.
I suppose you can't blame these people.
This movie was a clever marketing ploy. In fact this movie was based on a script ("The Cellar") that was a stand alone movie based on the interactions between a few people in an underground bunker, that had nothing to do with monsters. The filmmakers bought the rights to this movie and stuck in some additional elements especially the ending, to give it that vague Cloverfield vibe.
So if you're expecting another "Cloverfield," don't. This is more iof a psychological thriller that keeps you guessing until the final moments. You don't need to see the first one to 'get' this movie.
I learned a new word - gaslighting. Classic. And the paragraph that starts When Michelle escapes the bunker and finds a new threat waiting - reminds me of Room, and the story after the escape.
eta: Do not bypass the video interview with JJ Abrams at the end of the article as he talks about things to come and anthologies and things to come.

Saw it tonight. It was a pleasant surprise. Maybe that's not the best phrase for it. It was a suspenseful, interesting, well done movie.
A pleasant surprise is EXACTLY how I phrased it as well. I said the same thing Michelle said when she went outside, what the Hell?!!
And I don't think one needs to watch Cloverfield to see this. In fact my husband didn't and enjoyed it even more then I did.
