Both films stand as divisive entries in their respective film series but which one do you consider to be better?

TDKR is nowhere near as divisive. Batman Returns is aging badly. Hathaway's Catwoman is far and away better than Pfeiffer's (not a knock on Michelle, though).

TDKR has Tom Hardy as Bane. People love the guy and reference that role constantly. Batman Returns has Danny DeVito as Penguin — memorable, but not for the right reasons (but we all love him as Frank Reynolds in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia).

The Dark Knight is a brilliant film that can almost stand alone as a non-comic book movie. Batman Returns has aged but it's still really good too, if you look at it purely in the Burton-comic book world that it's set in.

I think Tom Hardy's Bane was the best villain, even topping the Joker, even though TDKR was the worst of the series and is almost a glorified B Movie by comparison. I think Nolan dropped the ball a bit with it.

He made some bizarre creative choices, like setting it eight years after the events of The Dark Knight and turning Bruce Wayne into a recluse. I believe he did that, along with having Bruce retire at the end of the film, to make sure the studio couldn't use his Batman, i.e. woo Christian Bale back for another movie by dangling a $40 million or even $50 million payday in front of him on a fishhook, as suggested by the rumor mill a few years back.

It ultimately hurt what could've been an amazing ending to a series. I think that Nolan tried to do too much and in the end the only thing that came out right was the amazing performance by Hardy as Bane.

I'm going with Nolan's version myself for all the reason listed above. I thought Ledger's Joker was going to be lame but from the time he came on the screen he was THE Joker!

Like someone else said Hathaway's Catwoman was awesome! She played that role and walked away with it. What I did like about Snyder' was Batman's costume. I give Affleck more credit for playing Wayne/Batman I didn't think he could pull it off. I stand corrected. Still the bright spot was Gal Gadot.

Perhaps the biggest reason Letoker hasn't been generally well-received: Heath's shadow looms large, and will for a long time. He blew away Joker Jack, who was essentially riffing Cesar Romero.

That someone is me! Anne even said she'd love to reprise the role. That would be neat.

Best Batman suit ever.

Pfeiffer's Catwoman was plain amazing, and the highlight of an otherwise dreary entry of the Burtonverse. Pfeiffer and Keaton dating off-camera helped sell the on-screen chemistry. If the ridiculous Penguin wasn't in the movie or had a greatly reduced role, Returns would have aged much better.
I think Returns was better than the animated Batman: Mask of Phantasm at exploring the same themes, although MotP is a far better movie overall.

Rises is becoming more of an Internet meme than a respected movie, thanks to the silly dialogue, and Ben Mendelsohn playing a weasely character opposite an ominous villain with a distorted voice, in both Dark Knight Rises and SW Rogue One. The movie felt like it wanted to be several movies at once. I think the movie would have benefited from rewrites before shooting.

which is really annoying considering how well cast those movies were, and how we'll never see Hathaway's Catwoman again or JGL as Robin

they now overshadow any other Batman related product massively.
