It's based on a book from I think 1970.
Apparently throughout the 70's every major leading man almost took it but ultimately passed. Then Stallone went for it and it saved his career. He has stated that a movie like that simply would not be made today.
I read a lot but couldn't get through the book. Movie definitely better
