a popular female singer whose style ran in between R&B, MOR pop, jazz, supper club soul styles was a big success in the 60's
in 1969 she had a popular hit, and in 1974 somewhat of a less popular hit where she duetted with a popular R&B group
all of a sudden her career slowed down and her records weren't selling. she feared she was a has- been
in 1979 a male singer/musician who had experienced gargantuan success for the past 5 years (however this man was NOT a well respected musician with males, only with females) "rescued" the artist. he produced her album which yielded 2 big hits that year. really, the entire album basically was his orchestra but her voice. the album became a huge seller and she was back on course.
the average listener probably has no idea that the male produced her album and that it was really his orchestra
1969 - Say a Little Prayer or Do You Know The way to San Jose?
1974 - Then Came You with The Spinners
1979 - going by your not popular with males hint, I'd say Barry Manilow. No idea about the songs or album name. By then I'd moved on to much better music.
The two hits rlrl is looking for is "I'll Never Love This Way Again" and "Deja Vu" off the album Dionne, which went RIAA platinum on her first effort on Clive Davis's new label, Arista records (AB-4230). Davis formed this company after spending many years after being president of Columbia Records through most of the 1970's.
Gimme Three Steps is right on Barry Manilow. The other songs he listed come earlier in her career, with "Then Came You" being recorded with the Spinners (Atlantic 3021) and the other two along with well over a dozen top 10 chart hits recorded on the Scepter label. Many of those songs went RIAA gold or platinum as well.
