As a kid I knew "Chicago" as a pleasant, if maybe a tad sappy, Pop-Rock band who did songs like "You're the Inspiration" and "Hard to Say I'm Sorry." However later I later I learned they started as a jazzy/bluesy group called "The Chicago Transit Authority." Apparently a fairly rollicking one too. (Not a great example as I think they were known in those days, not exactly "before they were famous.")
There is stuff on YouTube, before GaGa hit big, she played under her real name, no outlandish outfits, sitting at a Piano, very folky/country-ish, in the lower Mahattan bars
