All these screamo bands would make them go insane. Lots of people who never listened to rock music started listening to AC/DC and they're fine. May I suggest Pink Floyd if they prefered softer music?

John Coltrane
Stephen Sondheim
Bob Dylan
Led Zeppelin
Johnny Cash

That'll get them started. I guess they need a well-chosen R&B compilation from 1950-present, but I can't think of a single artist that would be most representative.
