Was he doing his most outrageous stuff in order to thumb his nose at the establishment, or as an elaborate practical joke, or as a commentary on the hippies that were being made a parody in their "non-conformity"
I think most of their stuff was brilliant and much of it was eerily entrenched in early 60's Doo-Wop. A truly great guitarist, but he seemed reluctant at times to showcase that talent.
I once read Zappa had an IQ of over 170 or somewhere in that area which, as a genius, could make him a bit eccentric. I never listened to his music. Maybe I should check out some of his stuff now, though. Then I can say at least I tried.

Zappa was indeed a genius, a non conformist, and his music is too weird for my tastes also.
