I'd argue most of Public Enemy's early stuff was before its time as there was no gangsta rap at the time they came out. After them you get Ice-T, N.W.A., et. all...

Great observation! I have always loved the Hooters song, didnt like Shut Up and Dance at first but it has really grown on me.
