Few, if any other Americans than myself are aware of a fledgling genre that notwithstanding its minuscule presence on the musical map has several compilations devoted to it: Rai N'B.
Rai N'B is a fusion of traditional North African popular music (raï) with American-influenced rap and R & B (almost invariably in French), often set to a house music beat. It also often integrates West African vocalists, adding another influence to the melange. Its main centers of production seem to be Paris and Marseille, France. The result is this:
(Here's what the French Wikipedia has to say about it - my translation:
Raï'n'B (also spelled "Raï&B" or "Raï/RnB") is a genre that appeared in the mid-2000s in France, born out of a meeting of French R'n'B with Algerian raï.
The duo DJ Kore & Scalp founded the style and released in 2004 the first compilation "Raï'n'B Fever"; an album combining Rap, R'n'B, and Raï.
Today the movement is increasingly important in the regions of the Maghreb, as well as in France, in Belgium and the entire Arab world. Certain singers have become emblems of this musical style, such as Amine and Reda Taliani. ("Dont même certains chanteurs sont devenus emblèmes de ce style musical (Amine, Reda Taliani…).")
"Andy Kershaw illustrates the point: “I would say that Algeria produces some of the most cutting-edge hybrids, taking their own music and mixing it with things like dub, ragga, or dance music and creating wonderful stuff. I get criticism from purists who say ‘This isn’t what Algerian music is supposed to be about!’. I always counter that argument by saying ‘If you were to take that rigid view of music, you would have to say that no guitarist in Africa should ever have picked up an electric guitar, which would be a ludicrous position to adopt’.”
