To me, this was one of the best specials put on by MTV. Take musical artist, unplug their electric instruments and any electronic devices used to modulate their voice. Some great concert experiences came out of that program. It got me wondering if there are any musical artist of today who could put on such a program. No autotune, no pre-recorded audio track, no lipsync, no flashy dance routines, no flashy costumes. Just the singers' voices and acoustic instruments.

I think there are many new acts out there who actually could. But give Katy Perry (i assume she's topping the official charts now) or Lindshay Lohan an acoustic guitar/semi acoustic guitar and let's see what happens.
Katy Perry did one of the last promoted MTV Unpluggeds in 2009 and even released an EP from the performance. She was actually pretty damn good. Indie pop as well as Sara Bareilles and Adele are to easy to point too but I think there are others who go the traditional route can. Pink, Christina Aguilera, Demi Lovato and Gwen Stefani come to mind. I'm sure there are more
Unplugged would be a cake walk for Arcade Fire, The New Pornographers or Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos.
That's the thing, there are a lot of indie folk groups out there now that can easily do unplugged performances. Just about any indie pop act that isn't electronic could go that route. I've heard Imagine Dragons do a Beatles song unplugged and I am pretty sure most of their traditional catalog can translate easily. Many acts also release acoustic versions of songs now. Any special edition of Shinedown's CDs have acoustic renditions, Aloe Blacc had an acoustic "Wake Me Up" on his CD. What I see is that despite Unplugged being a show of the past, acoustic versions of songs happens way too often is almost too cliche. Not trying to be a jadded fan here but it is an issue I see.
Edit: FYI Katy Perry's best unplugged song was a song she didn't even write.
