It would be hard to top 1970's Live at Leeds album (the whole thing) by The Who. I wore out two vinyl LP's and a couple of eight track versions and am now living happily with a second CD
Pretty much every song from Renaissance's "Live at Carnegie Hall" album blows away it's studio counterpart (with the possible exception of "Ashes are Burning" which doesn't have the guitar solo in the live version). Here's a good example of what I mean:
I like the album versions of THEN CAME THE LAST DAYS OF MAY and ASTRONOMY by BLUE OYSTER CULT, but they are a little slow and sound a little dated now. However the later live versions are very much improved and much more emotional, a couple of my alltime favs.
