Queen is speaking up about "We are the Champions" being played without their permission.
"Eye of the Tiger" was played at a presentation and the Band told them to cease and desist.
HEART objected strongly when "Barracuda" was played in 2008 at the convention.
One would think that one demonstrated objection would be enough of a message, but it apparently isn't.
Is this the arrogancy of politics or perhaps a demonstration that the current arrangers of the A/V background promotion can use anything they have ever heard without permission or compensation?
They see what they can get away with. They get that one shot at playing a song, get the crowd pumped up, get a good news video clip... then they just have measly consequences to deal with afterward when the musician complains. They already got what they wanted out of the song, so they can move on to the next tune on the campaign playlist.
Because it isn't as "cut and dry" as you seem to think it is.
Notice, too, it's always the control freaks on the left who, even when paid, can't resist being outraged when someone on the right likes and uses their song(s).
playing a tune in a bar? Its okay. Playing a tune on the radio...its okay.
Cover bands play tunes all the time....
Unsure bands have rights anymore to how it airs once they get their slice of the pie. Double dipping?
I do think there are some rights on publishing or compositions....
One of the most famous songs : Happy Birthday contained royalty fees. Yup you technically couldn't use it in film or public areas without the consent of the royalty owner ( warner Brothers bought the rights). thankfully its become "public" and no longer open to collections ....
Millions of people sang it....Not too many had to pay...
In marketing exposure of any type is key to the cause....go figure.
Our nation is loaded with DJs. You can hire a DJ to provide music to any event. Money is changing hands, but the actual artists do not get a dime from it.
What 'professional' DJ would ever dream of paying copyright fees for the music.

It is not left vs right. LeAnn Rimes would have a heart attack if a liberal cause used her music. So would Ted Nugent and probably Dave Mustaine.
The reason artists get annoyed is not money. It is because there are enough sheep out there who would believe that if they hear a song played by a certain party or cause, the artist endorses that party or cause. The artists do not want to be affiliated with the cause or have their fans think they support that party or cause.
It is pretty funny and ironic that you say "it isn't as cut and dry" and then you say it is "always" people on the left.

When it is, it is often justified anyway. Political parties who put songs in commercials are using those commercials to raise money. (Commercials = commerce.) If material is copyrighted it is simply not legal to use the material in any way that gets you money without giving the artist a cut of it, usually up front by paying to use the material before using it. That is the whole point of copyright.
