I love this band, but it just occurred to me that The Killers might as well be the next mega rock band. A great front man, incredible lyrics, lots of hits in a short career span, and an unique style
The Killers last album took a nosedive in the charts. Their popularity is waning....I'm thinking the next U2 has already arrived in the form of Coldplay.
I liked the retro 80's vibe of their breakthrough album, but I can't stand to hear anything of the newer stuff. His voice has now been so overly affected by his wishing to be somewhere between Robert Smith Ian Curtis and Ian McCullough, it makes me sick.
I've never done such a 180 on a band before.
They blow now.
Certainly not U2, and I agree with Interpol76...Coldplay is probably going to fill that out...
I don't know if there will ever be another U2, nor Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc...
The OP mentioned a number of hits in a short time span but remember that U2 has had hits over 30 years now with the exact same line-up. There have been several potential long-term mega-bands - Guns N Roses comes to mind - but band chemistry is hard to keep together for so long.
May be just my personal opinion, but Coldplay just doesn't have the broad appeal. I don't see the next mega-band with the longevity and broad appeal of U2 on the scene right now. But then it wasn't until Joshua Tree that U2 really became a household name so the next mega-band could be working its way up right now.
Day & Age wasn't as catchy as Sam's Town in my opinion but they are still a phenominal band and will be around for a long time yet. They are unlike any other band around at the moment too in that they have got such a distinctive sound. The way they write songs and their enthusiastic use of sharp and flat passing notes makes their music so uniquely theirs and that is important in separating a good band from a great one. I saw them live last February and the energy with which they played (not to mention their actual ability to play well live - a quality lacking in many modern bands) was breathtaking. By far and away the best gig I've ever been to.
The Killers are a fantastic band, with a great sound, and one of the best I have seen live. That said, I agree with some other posters that if there will be another U2 it is probably Coldplay. Luckily I like all three of those bands, so I won't be sick of hearing them on the radio.
