I like them both, but if I had to choose one it would be Billy Joel. I think his lyrics are deeper and more profound.

Elton John without a doubt. I do like Billy Joel, but I love Elton and his songs just take me back to my childhood. Love his voice, his piano playing, his lyrics. He's awesome.

A hard choice indeed. I went with Billy Joel...because Elton John has a cowriter in Bernie Taupin, and Billy Joel is more likely to pen the songs himself.

In fact, he wrote "Shameless" performed by Garth Brooks.

Good point, thank you. I didn't even think about that fact. Yes I believe Billy writes all his songs by himself. Technically for Elton, I think Bernie writes lyrics and Elton music.

Didn't know about "Shameless" Thanks again

I think Elton John for the number of songs I like the most. But Billy Joel for the best songs (Anthony's Song/Movin Out)

Elton John's 'INDIAN SUNSET'

and most of B.J.'s early works.

So that's both.. Both great showmen!

Go listen to Piano Man, then to A Matter of Trust. Then get back to me.

Elton John cause at least his music from the 1980s wasn't as cheesy compared to Billy Joel's music from the 1980s.
