Fanny.
I am not talking about singing performers like the Shirelles, etc.
I'm talking about women who, in addition to singing, played their instruments and wrote their own songs.
I saw them in Denver sometime in the early 70's--I think they opened for Poco but am not positive about that. Fanny had a hit with Charity Ball, but their other stuff was rockin' too. They were pioneers, talented musicians, and deserve more recognition IMHO.

Suzi Quatro:

Altough this song reeks of Nicky Chinn/Mike Chapman.

I well remember Suzi Quatro as well as the GTO's.
But my recollection of the Shaggs is kind of fuzzy (no pun intended.)
I recall that the main talent of the GTOs was perhaps in other areas.
Thanks to all for their contributions!

Solid choice BWP! Yes, the girl group Fanny were pioneers all right! Their chart hit, "Charity Ball" was top 10 for several weeks in the summer of 1971. They recorded 4 albums for Warner Bros. and their 5th lp was on Casablanca in 1974, I believe.

Must make for an interesting sound, having hihat and snare, but no bass drum...

Thanks. I am glad someone on this board knows of them. The 60s were full of great female bands, especially from the Motor City!

Seems like this thread is going on a stretch, there doesn't seem to be a lot of all women bands that wrote their material/played their own instruments...drums, guitar, bass, keys....something beyond tambourine.

This is a good thread well worth of study...

There were many great women artists who were not trite, played their own instruments, wrote their own material to name a few like Joni Mitchell (guitar), and Grace Slick (vocals) but fronting a band of all men...lotsa guts that Ms. Slick, and something about a blue eyed brunette drives me happy nuts!

It leaves me to think that the time back then did not leave the door open wide enough to give all women bands their due, or they were non-existent. The ones that existed then seemed somewhat cheesy, novelty and marginalized.

I can't get past that Shaggs photo...I shudder at the touch of cold stone to think what they might have sounded like...The GTO's were produced by Frank Zappa, which helps...he lets artists be themselves...not sure if they even played a note, yet they wrote their material, giggled and sang songs about Captain Beefhearts buckle shoes...Pamela Des Barres of the GTO's went on to write THE groupie book tell all...Jeff Beck did play on the GTO's album.
