What's the area around Tennessee State Uni like? I'm relocating from out of state. Saw a few nice places just south of TN state on Clifton. Everyone insists I drive by before calling for a showing.

I'm from Chicago and have spent some time in rough neighborhoods. Curious how Nashville's "up and coming" compares to Chicago's "up and coming." I wouldn't mind living in a few "up and coming" neighborhoods in Chicago when it means a nicer, larger, and less expensive place. But I do know my lay of the land here and where not to wander too far off to. And which neighborhoods to avoid altogether regardless of how much I can get for my money.

Ideally, I would like to be in East Nash. Minus the fact that it's very suburban, it has a lot of what I'm looking for, but I haven't seen very many houses up for rent (at least online) of late.

Ha. Though I'd call anything east of Riverside Dr. pretty suburban.

I wouldn't call East Nashville suburban by our standards, but Nashville has very little that a transplant from a larger city would call urban to begin with, so from that standpoint.....

By Chicago standards either. Its nothing like Schamburg, etc.

There is no shopping whatsoever East of Riverside.

I wouldn't live anywhere near TSU, especially around Clifton. Dive through the area at night and see what you think and count the homes with massive iron doors, those things don't lie.

Agree. I would stay away from anything in the ring of Charlotte Pike to I40 btwn I40/65 to 42nd.

I'd also be suspect about everything north of I40 out to 42nd. I'm sure there are a few pockets that are fine - if you knew the area. Right around Elizabeth Park looks not bad.

Hm.. I mean suburban in the sense that there are single family homes and yards in East Nashville. 3 flats and apartment buildings are nonexistent, let alone sky scrapers of course.

I compared crime maps and it seems like crime is more prevalent in nice areas of Chicago than questionable areas in Nashville. With the exception of registered sex offenders, which Nashville oddly has many concentrations of in various pockets. Weird.

Is there a reason you want to live there?

"Not as bad as Chicago" doesn't mean it's good.

Right. It doesn't mean it's good, but if there's less crime than Chicago, I figure I would feel comfortable there.

I'm considering an iffy area because it's cheaper. Plain and simple. I do work (outside of my 9-5) that requires a lot of space. I wouldn't be able to have that additional space in a nice area with the budget I am trying to stay within.
