Hi,

We are thinking of moving to Brentwood/Franklin area with our family for a work/life balance. We are an Asian/Caucasian mixed family. Currently, where we live, we have noticed some racism towards our kids in the schools. (we have talked with the teachers/admin but nothing seems to change) Racism against us we can handle but when it is against our kids it really bothers us.

We have heard a lot of great things about the area and we have read it is family friendly. Just want to make sure it is family friendly to all races.

Please forgive me since some may find me asking this question as offensive and unnecessary but, I really like to hear people's honest opinions on living in the area with a mixed Asian family.

I have read the forums and the posts are a little old. So, I thought I would start a new thread with the following questions.
1. If you have a Asian/Cauc mixed family, what have your experiences been when shopping, dining, etc. in the Brentwood/Franklin area? Have you felt uncomfortable/comfortable?
2. Have there been any incidents in the schools due to the kids Asian background?
3. Overall, do you feel accepted for who you are regardless of race.

I apoligize in advance if I have offended anyone with this post.

There are many people of Asian descent living in Brentwood. I cannot speak as a person in a mixed family, so perhaps I should not comment. But I personally know quite a few mixed families. Kenrose Elementary School alone has 22 different native languages represented in the student body.

You won't be the first ones here.

Re: the post above. I would just caution that one person's perception of "many" might not be another's. Brentwood and Franklin are not exactly known for their diversity. Then again, I grew up in the most diverse county in the country and my high school was 60% Asian. Having four children of color in my daughter's class is not diverse to me.

And then there's us. We're Jewish and we get comments. Not mean ones, just ... awkward ones.

That said, I personally would love to have more diversity here! I don't want to scare anyone off because then it's self-perpetuating. But most of the mixed-race families I've met here live in Davidson County.

I guess I figured that anyone who is considering Williamson County for relocation would have already done the internet research and know that Brentwood is 90% white and 5% Asian, that Franklin is 79% white, 3% Asian and 17% black.

How do those numbers imply "many?"

Are you a white Christian? Then you have NO IDEA what it's like to live here as someone who's an outsider.

Well, let's see. 5% of 40,000 is 2,000. Compared to San Francisco, no, that's not "many." Compared to Franklin, it could be.

I said in my first post that I am not of a mixed-race family. Don't insert religion into this when the OP did not ask about that.

According to recent census counts, the United States is 5% Asian so I guess Brentwood is about average. Franklin has some catching up to do! Everyone will be a minority somewhere! i visited China in the mid 1980's and was followed by kids saying "Hello How are You??" over and over. They would stare at my blue eyes, which were quite strange looking to them.

May I ask where the OPer would be moving from. I have a coworker in your situation I will post more later when I'm not on a phone.
