Does anyone know where there are working farms that sell thier products? I am looking to purchase side of beef, pork and whole chicken, eggs and fresh milk.

I have found some but was wondering if anyone could share thier knowledge of such farms.

There's a black angus farm on Hwy 96 between Franklin and Murfreesboro. I've also bought chicken, eggs, milk and beef from an organic farm out somewhere near Carthage, but it's been years so I don't remember the name of the farm...sorry!

Thank you timothyb for posting the (Local Table) site. I have lived in Robertson county for 40 years or more and only knew of 3 of these farms. Next year I can find some blueberries.

Definitely Avalon Acres Farm they have a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program & have various drop off points around Nashville. Their website is avalon-acres.com be sure to check out their blog too.

And for the side of beef read below, sorry in advance for the length, I've copied & pasted the info below from a cattle farmer.

Hello Friends!

As you may or may not know, Bruce has developed a serious love for
working with cattle over the last few years. He has taken his hobby a
step further and has been raising 5 cows that will be ready late this
fall for slaughter. These are limousin steers that are known to
produce some of the leanest red meat available. (In the future, we’ll
probably have angus beef available as well.)

What does the mean for you? If you’ve ever considered buying grass
fed, all natural, hormone and antibiotic free beef, now is the time!
We are pleased to offer this high quality beef for you and your family
and hope that you will contact us with any questions that you may
have. Please, forward this information to any friends that may be
interested.
We’ve put together some information below to address questions that
you may have if you’ve never purchased beef this way before.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. Why buy beef directly from a cattle farmer?

Our beef is hormone free, antibiotic free, grass and all natural grain
fed. These cows have lived in open pasture their whole loves. The way
a cow has been raised has everything to do with how it will taste and
these animals are premium grade. You will be buying local and getting
the freshest meat possible. Supermarket beef consists of cows that are
raised in feed lots with thousands of other animals. They are pumped
full of antibiotics and their feed contains animal by-products and
antibiotics. You'll notice a difference, for sure.

2. How does it work?

Our beef is sold in quarters, halves or whole cows. It is not sold by
the pound but rather a flat fee, plus the processing. We will take it
to the processor for you but then it becomes the property of the
person buying it. The buyer is responsible for picking up their beef.
It will be dry aged for 2 weeks and will be USDA inspected. The buyer
has lots of choices in how it is cut and packaged. You will need a
freezer to store meat when buying this way. (The smallest quantity
available - a quarter - will yield about 100 pounds of meat.)

3. What is the cost?

As mentioned before, beef will be sold for a flat fee v/s by the
pound. (This method actually works in the buyer’s favor. The breed of
cattle that we have raised (Limousin) traditionally yields more lean
beef than other breeds.)

PLEASE NOTE: Your final purchase price will depend on the processing
which is determined by pounds of meat. Pounds that the cow will yield
are approximate. Estimates are as close as we can give. The examples
given below are for your information to help you make a decision. We
can not estimate exactly how much your processing fees will be.
Processing will vary depending on the amount of beef the cow yields
and how you choose to have your meat processed and packaged.

PRICES ARE AS FOLLOWS

* $425 flat fee for a quarter beef plus the processing (which will be
around $150) TOTAL for a quarter would be *approximately* $575 for
about 90 - 110 pounds of meat. (About $5.75 a pound).

* $800 flat fee for a half cow plus the processing (which would be
around $300) TOTAL for a half would be *approximately* $1100 for about
190-210 pounds a meat (more than likely, more than 200 pounds. This
works out to *about* $5.50 a pound).

*$1500 for an entire cow plus the processing (which will be around
$550 depending on your processing choices.) TOTAL for a whole would be
*approximately* $2050 for about 450 (or more!) pounds of meat. This
works out to about $4.60 a pound).

4. How does the quality and price compare with what’s available in the
store?

Grass fed beef is leaner and healthier. If you currently buy a brand
such as “Laura’s Lean Beef”, that’s the closest thing to compare it to
- Only healthier, better tasting, local, and less expensive! Most
varieties of All Natural Ground Beef run $4.50 and up - JUST FOR
GROUND BEEF. You will be getting ground beef, roasts, and steaks all
for that price per pound! This is premium “designer” beef that has
been primarily grass fed (a little all natural feed - mainly corn) and
they have had no hormones or antibiotics.

5. Oh! I want some! How do I order?

We have limited quantities available so we must take deposits to
reserve your beef. The smallest quantity that we will sell is a
quarter cow. At this juncture, individual cuts are not available.

Deposit amounts are as follows:

* To reserve a quarter: $100
* To reserve a half: $200
* To reserve a whole cow: $400

Deposits are non-refundable (unless for some unforeseen reason, we are
unable to provide the beef). The balance of the fee will be due once
the cows are ready to go to the processor (We are anticipating late
Oct / early November).

Processing fees will be paid directly to the processor.
