Hi! I have to move to Nashville around the first week of January 2010 and I need advice about the different neighborhoods in Nashville. How much is the average rent for a one bedroom apartment? Also what areas are safe to live in? If possible I would like to live within 5 to 6 miles from Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Thanks for reading this post.

You probably want to start by looking in what is called Area 2 on the Nashville MLS map. This is the area to the west, southwest, and south of Vanderbilt; and you would probably want to stay south of I-40 West, and west of I-65 South (think of it as a roughly "pie shaped" area). There are several nice neighborhoods within that area that are within a reasonably commute to Vanderbilt; this includes Hillsboro Village/Belmont, Green Hills, West End, Sylvan Park, Cherokee Park, Richland, Hillwood, and Berry Hill. It also include the neighborhoods of Oak Hill and Belle Meade--those are very expensive areas however.

You could even expand the range a little and include West Meade and Bellevue. It's not really such a bad commute from Bellevue to Vanderbilt since it's a "straight shot" up the highway. There are a number of fairly nice apartment complexes in Bellevue and the rent seems reasonably. Quite a few single nurses and techs who work at Vanderbilt live in Bellevue.

I can't really help you with what apartment rents are. I just don't keep up with them. The biggest problem would be if you were looking for one that was $400 or $500 a month; then you could have a problem finding a nice apartment in a nice area within that price range and within your optimum commuting distance.
