I just moved into a mobile home in Tucson with a fair amount of land, and coming from MN, where you were restricted to Zone 4 plants, when I go to a Nursery here it's like being in a candy store, being able to plant Zone 9 plants.
I just planted 20 plants, they're all just babies, and I look upon them as pets. I greet them every morning, talk to them, touch them, encourage them, compliment them and apologize if I've been anywhere negligent. They're all doing beautifully.
What about you, do you really think plants listen to you and respond to touch?

I don't think the do, yet I find myself doing sort of the same thing you do, talking to them (in my head) and sending good thoughts their way and mentally encouraging them. I love being around plants and I love gardens.
They don't have ears, so I'm pretty sure they don't listen to me. They do respond to touch--if I prune them, they grow differently afterwards. Spending time with them, observing their needs, and tending to them makes them respond by producing more and growing more, and that's how they respond to us.
I do love plants, but I don't think of them as pets, more as either food or as beauty.
I talk to my plants, tell them how pretty they are, encourage them. Do they hear me? Probably not, no one else ever seems to but hey, I talk to myself as well.
I planted 2 Red Fairy Dusters side by side, the one is going great guns, but his brother is growing but ever so slowly. So I'm coddling the one that's growing slower, touching it more, talking to it. When Red Fairy Dusters become more grown, you can hardly go within 2 feet of them as the bees swarm all over those plants, and the hummingbirds love them as well.
So I tell my Fair Dusters that when they become grown they'll get swarms of visitors every day!
Plants are living things. The animal rights people want us to believe that animals are sensitive to everything we do, but plants are all but abiotic (so there's nothing wrong with being a vegetarian). Plants are just as sensitive to us. They can detect other living beings, and they want to live as much as we do.
