I took an overnight flight to Las Vegas. I had a window seat and I saw spots of lights in the Nevada desert, where it looked like it was a house or either a car out in the middle of nowhere, and the next nearest light (their neighbor) to them was a significant distance away.

Anybody know who/what that is? Do people live remotely in the desert, maybe camping? Is it the military? Aliens? etc.

I guess I assumed the desert at night would just be a dark place with no human inhabitants.

Could be all of the above. Where were you coming from?

Exactly. Could be folks living "off the grid", or it could be a small town. It all depends on from where you were coming and how high up you were when you saw it.

From the EastCoast. I flew through Utah and eastern Nevada desert.

It definitely wasn't a small town. Like I said, I only seen specks of light which were a distance away from each other. It was the same as looking at the stars at night: blackness with small spots of light.

Sounds like just ranches, then.

You are correct on all three.

A lot of people buy acreages and live in isolated areas. Often there is nothing more than a dirt road leading from whatever highway runs closest to the property. Where they get their electricity varies. Some are able to get it from rural suppliers, while others generate their own and have storage systems to operate whatever they need at night (assuming that they are using something other than wind power).

When I first moved to Las Vegas back in the stone age, I took the train to Delta, UT, with a friend to pick up a car. It took all day because the train would stop in the middle of nowhere and pick up people going to town. We'd look around and wouldn't see anything like a town or even a house for miles. Go figure.
