Hi everyone!

I've been looking to move to New England in the next few years and Portsmouth, NH has really captured my interest. I would love to live in a condo, never been interested in a house. My question is... what is going on with condo prices in Portsmouth? I've seen condos in the 600k range... and then down the street, they are 2-3M. Is there something I'm missing? Why are some of them so MUCH more expensive? :O

Is Portsmouth becoming the place to be for rich people?

Also, unrelated but... I'm dying to know if I'll get to have a white Christmas in Portsmouth. When does it typically start to snow?

Portsmouth is the "it" city in NH these days. It has not been affordable for a long time, but these days it's spiraling out of reach for most everyone but the well-off.

Yes, Portsmouth is not for the working class anymore, especially the downtown. It now caters to wealthy residents and rich tourists from south of NH. Most of the shops now are expensive boutiques and bistros catering to rich tourists and vegan hipsters. Outside of downtown is a different story and you can probably find something not too terribly overpriced out towards Lafayette Rd heading south. Don't get me wrong - it's a beautiful place and the location is stunning especially places like Prescott Park, Strawberry Banke, Bow Street and Market Square. As someone who grew up in Kittery 40 years ago, it just seems foreign to me now. I guess change is inevitable, but I liked the slightly "gritty" Portsmouth better. You will pay dearly to live there.

Portsmouth downtown has becoming the target for wealthy retirees. The landscape of the city is changing as they are putting up new condos as fast as they can to get those million dollar prices. The cultural landscape is also changing in that these older residents don't like the loud arts and music scene that made Portsmouth the place to be in the first place. There has been lots of fighting in the last few years (google Keep Portsmouth Loud).
Check out Newmarket or Dover.

+1, and while Portsmouth certainly has a lot going for it, there are several other very nice towns in the NH-seacoast region that are less expensive - especially just a bit inland, and if you like Portsmouth you can also consider across the Piscataquah River in Kittery, ME.
