Downtown
Mill district
The falls
Little Lima (Market Street just left of Main)
South Paterson
the Manor District (next to Eastside Park) has many nice Victorians. Very huge houses.
Also next time in Newark
Try Bloomfield Avenue west of Branch brook park
and of course branch brook park.

If you want to get fancy & do the Tri-state area as it is in South Jersey, you could do a similar trip, then take Amtrak to Wilmington, from 30th St Station..

What about Dover? I just passed through there today and I'd forgotten what a cool place the downtown is. Interesting store fronts and architecture. Lots of thrift stores and curiosities. Some of the homes on the outskirts look a little rundown, but there are also some pretty cool ones too with ornate porches and balconies.
