I have to drive from Florham Park, NJ to Hoboken every night to get home. Are there any back roads to avoid all the traffic I hit. I use routes toward the Holland Tunnel-(1 & 9 - and the highway). I need back roads desperately!!--Thanks!!

Wondering which roads you take presently from Fluorescent Park to Hobe Town.
Also where you hit traffic? I would assume you hit Holl Tunn traffic at the end of the Skyway where the "covered roadway" NJ 139 is. If so I very often would jump off the Skyway go towards the right and then you can plod along JC streets or the upper level of 139 and avoid going back down towards the tunnel traffic totally. I used to do that even going into NYC if the traffic is jacked up going in.

Something more or less like this would keep you off the Holl Tunn jams:
Florham Park, NJ to Hoboken, NJ - Google Maps

or something like this,,,either way there are ways around the Rt139 jams,,

You can also hop off the Skyway earlier at the Broadway exit which drops you down to US Truck 1&9 if the Skyway towards the tunnel gets backed up.

Another way is,,,or you can go back down the ramp from the upper 139 down towards the tunnel, stay in the left turn lane and make that first left which takes you into Hoetown,,,or:

This is the way I usually go. Of course, during heavy traffic, tunnel destined cars use that left turn lane to cut in front of traffic, and then try to cut over at the last minute, blocking the left turning cars for whom the lane was intended. Even so, it is often the best way.

One other way, where you can avoid both tunnels, is to go through Patterson Plank Road and down the hill. I used this route a lot when I lived in Hoboken.

If I hear tunnel-bound traffic is bad taveling from the Newark area, I usually use the Truck Route 1&9 then cut through Jersey City to get to Hoboken. Here's the route:

I'd take rt. 10 to 280 get off at exit 16 to Harrison Ave( left on harrison towards JC) That will turn into Newark Tpke then rt. 7 which takes you right into JC heights, then a left on Central, right on Congress and BAM you are right by The Doric on the other side of the 14th st bridge.

There can be traffic here to but once you are in JC and you learn the way the streets run you can manuever around that too.

Just a suggestion, you might be quicker staying on 280 towards the end, I think its Exit 17A that lets you off towards JC on Newark Tpike. That would avoid driving local streets through Harrison and bring you out near the NJ PickYourPocket Tpike, you traveling on Newark Pike underneath it.

this is a good way to go and allows one to abort the route if the traffic is bad under 139. you can either cut to the right and go through JC, or bear to the left onto tonnelle, and then cut up into Union City and come into hoboken on ravine (i think). used to do that alot.

Sometimes you might be right but 280 can also be murder after 16 with people merging onto 95 and I really haven't ever seen too much traffic through harrison, the worst traffic would be on the newark pike. Either one of these would work for the OP.
