Hello,

I currently live in Lodi, NJ with my family of two High Schoolers, and husband and we are interested in moving to another town in the Bergen County or surrounding area. We are okay with Lodi, NJ but we have been researching around and we feel that we could get by better (have more for our bucks) in other towns in the surrounding areas with the same income and rent/home prices but with a better town feeling, and better location.

We are going to be renting but hope to purchase a multifamily home by next year and would not like to be moving out of the same town again. Would like to rent and then buy our home but in the same town. Our home budget is around $380,000 Max but would like to buy a short sale/foreclosure if possible when the time comes.

We are interested in a suburban area but with a town/community feeling, good/great schools for the area, transportation to Manhattan either bus or train (one highschooler is going to Baruch in Manhatttan), property taxes not too high (max $10,000 for a multifamily home; have seen this even in Rutherford but could make an exception if needed), and maybe not too far from the city by public transportation 45 minutes max if possible.

We have been thinking of Rutherford, East Rutherford, Lyndhurst and Woodridge. Any other suggestions would be good as well. Out of them all We have liked Rutherford and Woodridge the best due to the georgous homes they have, but I would like to obtain more information on Woodridge because we feel it is too desolate. You do not see anyone outside walking or that towny feeling like that of Rutherford. We would not mind East Rutherford due to its approximity with Rutherford because I have heard their taxes are lower as well as their home prices but I am not sure of their schools.

As a mother and the one trying to get the most information possible, I would appreciate all suggestions, information and any advice given that could help us in making the best decision for us. We are interested in moving by the summer time.

Thank you for your time and help.

Hi, to give you a better understanding since it looks like no one wants to post in your thread; Rutherford is much more community driven because they have a very nice "main st" where you see shops and businesses where people can gather. It is a nice neighborhood if you want a town feeling with an established community. Lyndhurst is okay but i have heard that their schools system is not better than Rutherford. In regards to woodridge I am not sure what information to give you but hopefully someone in this thread can give you a comparison.

I currently rent in East Rutherford and Rutherford looks to have a beautiful downtown and community feel to it.

Would you consider Fair Lawn? excellent commute options, great schools, lots of activities/programs for children, very involved people in their community and safe.

Lodi is OK. Middle-class/working-class neighborhood, lots of single-family homes, but squished together--no yards.

No, East Rutherford is nowhere near Pennsylvania. East Rutherford is where the Giants play. You know, where you see the NYC skyline in the background on TV.

Look at a map. I'm not being sarcastic here, but if you are asking that question, I know you have not looked at a map of New Jersey.

New Brunswick is a college town. It's where Rutgers is.

Where are you coming from?
