I am moving to New Jersey very soon from Japan. I will be working in Colts Neck (Naval Weapons Station Earle), but want to live near the Grove Street PATH due to my wife's job in the city. Anyone have any idea what the commute would be like if I left Jersey city between 5:30 and 6:00 am? What about toll costs? Thank you very much in advance!
I would say it would take between 45 -55 minutes. Since traffic is going towards NYC you shouldnt really hit much. You can take the NJ turnpike south to either route 9 south (more lights and traffic but less mileage) to route 18 or you could take the turnpike south to the garden state parkway south to 18 and you could pick up route 34 which is where earle is.Tolls on the turnpike would probably run you about $1.40 and on the garden state, around 25 cents on the way there. On the way back, i think you have a 70cent toll and a 25cent toll. Someone correct me if i am wrong. i think you may miss the 70 cents toll plaza but i am not sure.

the drive should be around an hour or so, toll will cost over $6. and the ride back in the evenings can be difficult
That shouldn't be bad given it is a reverse commute. Leaving that early would be helpful. When I did a reverse commute from Port Imperial (West New York) to Sayreville (not really the same thing, but a similar distance), it took only about 35 minutes going, but coming home was a little more toublesome. Fortunately I was a teacher, so most days I was able to get home before the real traffic began.
If you can get home by 4:00, that would be golden.
Tolls will not cost over 6 dollars. OP, tolls will cost about 4-5 dollars round trip.
is that so? the cash peak tolls from 14c which is jersey city is $2.55 each way which equals $5.10 plus $.70 for the southbound parkway toll and you get....
5.80, so you're correct it isn't over $6
