A job has come up in New York and it has been suggested I go for it. Before I do, I need to make sure I could afford to live there.
I have up to $1800, preferably less to spend on rent, I would like to rent a house with a private garden with a minimum of 2 bedrooms, we would love a garage and basement too.
I would be working on Madison Avenue.
We are moving over from Ireland, we have three dogs who would be coming with us. We would want to live in a good area as we would want the dogs to be safe while we are out.

Thanks!
Madison Ave is a long North/South street, it would help to know what Manhattan district you would be working in.
It also really depends on how long of a commute you are willing to take and if you are going to have a car or do mass transit.
If you want to forgo a car and just use mass transit, or if you have another family member that would need a car thus you need to take mass transit you should factor that in.
There are trains and buses that can get you to NYC but then once you get into the city you still need to get to your location.
Ideally we would like to stay within an hour commute. Our current commute in Ireland is 1 hour 15 mins so we are used to it! We will get a car eventually but I would rather if it wasnt a factor.
$1800 for an entire house seems unrealistically low for rent unless you're in a bad neighborhood in Jersey City or Newark, but maybe you could do that somewhere like East Rutherford or Lyndhurst. The commute's not too bad from there as you're near the train station, though you'll still have to get from Penn Station to work. Home rents are hard to get a handle on out in the suburbs as there just aren't many rentals.
I agree $1800 for a whole house is probably unrealistic. You may be able to find a 2 bedroom in a multi-family house in that price range, but I doubt you'll get the single family house you are envisioning.
Also, many landlords won't be keen on renting to someone with 3 dogs.
