Does anyone else find this whole scenario to be a little bizarre?

Not really, when the gov't allows it by kowtowing to them.

No, you're not alone. I thought the same thing, too.

Despite what you may think, lots of European immigrants did not jump into English so quickly 100 years ago.

Daniel Cubias: Sprechen Zie Deutsch?: Did European Immigrants Really Learn English Quickly?

I know people do it, but it is not a trait I would expect of a business owner. Especially someone who has lived here since age 18.

I get a vibe that something is off with the guy. Cant say what, but I get that feeling.

If most of his client base and vendors knew his language, I could see how he got away with it as long as he got help with paperwork. I couldn't ever imagine moving to another country and not having the curiosity or necessity to learn the local language, but the existence of individuals who live in ethnic enclaves(whether it's social or geographic) that don't know a lick of English after years of living here is not unheard of.

It's possible he knows it and is just pretending not to. Like people in Montreal when American tourists ask them for directions.

there are lots of people living in america that dont speak any english. spanish will be a popular language since you have so many spanish speaking people, so they can get away with it. im sure if you go to any area that is primarily one ethnic group (china town) you will find people who have lived in america a long time and dont speak english. they dont travel around america, they stay in their small area and visit the motherland periodically.

Maybe he was selling those "sugar free" muffins from the Butterfly Bakery in nearby Clifton in his store. I read people really liked them!

Just heard on the news by the way that he owed almost $30k in child support.
