I really appreciate your input my commute will br directly into grandcentral terminal. I see you like Westfield.. What about going to midtown.. What other train lines areas do you like for a commute? We are looking to spend around 500k on a home in an area with good schools.. I just want to have a decent commute everyday to grandcentral
You can't have that from New Jersey.
I think people thought you meant NY Penn, which does have trains coming from NJ. Grand Central gets the trains from upstate NY and Connecticut.
While there is a lot of good info in this thread, there is no good answer the OP's or other's questions because it is so reliant on their price range to buy or rent in NJ.
I've been to Westfield and it is very nice, but I would argue Red Bank area which includes Rumson, Fair Haven, Little Silver and Navesink River Road is nicer. Commute via ferry is great and drops you off right downtown.

That's not true. There is no ferry that drops you in downtown Red Bank. Red Bank's not even on the ocean. It's on the Navesink River, a couple of miles inland, and when my train crosses the Navesink I can see birds STANDING in the river, so I doubt a ferry could navigate up the river that far.
There's a ferry that drops you in the Belford section of Middletown, and there's a ferry that drops you in Atlantic Highlands.

I love Red Bank but I think of it as a train town rather than a ferry town. But Oyster is right--you could drive just 20 minutes to a 45-minute ferry ride to downtown NEW YORK.
