My boyfriend is a medical student will be working at Jersey City Medical Center for 5 months, so we are looking for a place in either Jersey City or Hoboken. I currently live in Manhattan, but I work in Bergen County, so I will be driving. We are both in our mid-20s and looking for someplace safe, affordable, easily accessible to the city, and where it will be easy to find parking.
A lot of the places I've looked into don't offer leases for the amount of time we would need. We have an opportunity to take over a lease at the Beacon, but I have read mixed reviews on this forum and others, though I'm not sure if those characterizations are still accurate. Can anyone give an updated overview of the area? Also, if anyone has any other suggestions for a place to live from August to December, I would be very appreciative
Thank you in advance for any insight you can provide!
It's so easy to get from Manhattan to JC, why not stay where you are?
The PATH train at Grove Street in JC is the closest PATH stop to the hospital. It's a bit of a walk down Jersey Ave to get from the PATH to the hospital.
Another option (if you want to walk less) is to get off the PATH at Newport-Pavonia & hop on the Light Rail to the Jersey Avenue stop. This will put you directly across the street from the hospital.
The beacon has great amenities. But the location is not great. However they have a shuttle that will take you downtown. Its going to be hard to find a short lease so if you find something decent you may want to take it.
I moved to JC when I first relocated for a job and had good luck with a craigslist sublet right off Grove and York St.
Rule of thumb for Jersey City seems to be draw a line on the highway 78 and live east of it. The older parts of the area have a Hoboken vibe but with a slightly lower cost of living. Live west of the 78 highway and it gets a bit rough in parts. If you have a vehicle you will need a parking permit and lottery winning luck to street park in Hoboken. Jersey City around Grove St has mostly zoned residents parking so you will need a permit as well. West of 78 most of Jersey City is open parking aside from street cleaning hours.
