I went to the camp in the early 70s, maybe 1971. There were tipi's you could stay in. I took English horse back riding lessons, but don't know where we were transported to. Did you also attend the camp?
Not sure if anyone is still reading the thread...I remember camp sac fondly- I was a camper there in the early to mid 80s and worked there during its lats few years- the lats summer as a sleepaway camp was 1989. It still brings back many bittersweet memories- so sad to see it closed. The camp itself is still there- I stop by every so often to check out the can lids in the dining hall- remember those?
I'd be happy to reminisce more with anyone interested!

I went there from the summer of 1964 through summer of 1971. I think I was in every unit including the special ones (covered wagons, dolphin at the waterfront). Didn't ever do the teepee unit, or the closest one, Oneida. Always stayed for 2 weeks and then in 1971 I was there for 5 weeks as a Jr. Counselor. I learned to swim, sail, canoe, hike and pack efficiently. I do remember the can lids (made from #10 cans) in the dining hall, wonder if mine is still there. Made the best of friends and the best of memories from there. I remember marching in the Sparta 4th of July parade, and walking (as a CIT) to the ice cream place. Remember June Rabel (camp director?) and Sue Nye the legendary waterfront counselor? And then the Klitzke's took over the directorship/nurse position. I knew it had closed, but I thought everything had been bulldozed. I might have to take a wander through the area the next time I'm in northern New Jersey. Wow! Does this bring back great memories. If those tent walls could talk!
Yep, I remember Sac. Went there for 8 summers, from 1968 to 1975. I was in Oneida, Teepee, Tuscarora, Cayuga, and Dolphin. I remember doing the Horsewoman unit, Dolphin a couple of times, Navigator once (did a 3 day canoe trip down the Delaware River that I'll never forget), and a very "green" one called "I Dig Earth." I remember June (camp director) and Twig (anyone remember her?). How about Brandy? She was my number 1 favorite counselor!!! Or GK? She was a close second. I've been back a couple of times with my own Girl Scout daughter, the last time was in August of 2001. It was still there, complete with the can lids in the dining hall.
It is such a surprise to read about other Camp Sac. "veterans". Thank you for sharing your info...it is a wonderful trip back in time.
I went to summer camp from the late 1950's into the mid sixties. My mother was a volunteer to the Raritan Valley G.S. Council, so our family camped there once or twice over the non-camping year to do repairs. My mom loved it.
During the camping session, the RC girls would be taken by bus to a not-too-far-away church/monastary for Sunday mass. Does anyone remember that church, or know what it is called? I haven't been in NJ for many, many years, but would like to see both the camp and that church again someday.
i know there is a camp sacajewa in farmingdale. maybe they moved there. its too a girl scout camp. my daughter went several times.great place.
