This has intrigued me for quite some time now . I have lived in India till 5 years ago where self serve was not an option just like here, and there was a mix of men and women in the gas station attendant workforce. However, here in NJ I am yet to see a female gas station attendant, and I have traveled across most of the state. Anybody have an idea as to why this happens ? Is it due to Risk Vs. Reward, or are there some odd regulations which make it hard for women to participate in such jobs.
I've always wondered that too. There's an old abandoned gas station on Godwin Ave. in Midland Park (it's been abandoned for many years), but I remember around 15 years ago I stopped to get gas there and a gorgeous young girl (around 19 or 20) was the one pumping the gas. I thought that was awesome, and I still regret not asking her out.
There may have been one other time that I saw a woman pumping gas in NJ, but it is exceedingly rare.
My guess is that not a whole lot of women go for the job.
But not seeing even a single woman for an occupation is kind of shocking considering its 2014. Very few women go into construction, but I have seen a handful of female construction workers before.
It's a job where you have to stand out in all weather, including brutal humidity and freezing cold. My uncle owns a gas station/mechanic shop and when I visit in extreme weather, including heat/humidity and snow, I can't imagine pumping gas in bad weather like his employees. I especially don't want to stand out getting sweaty all day. I imagine this has a lot do to with it.
gas station attendants are like sitting ducks when a robbery goes on and if you watch youtube theres many that get killed making at or close to minimum wage. there are folks who are high or desperate for money/food/beer and at late night only gas stations are open, and the person behind the counter are most likely unarmed. the police cant be everywhere.
I think I've seen a few mostly at the bigger chain type stations that have convenience stores like Wawa. Also at those stations there are likely to be more employees around the clock making it safer for the individuals.
They're home cooking and cleaning.(JM ducking for cover)
