I read suspicious package, could be anything from something falling off truck or tossed from a window to a threat. They just need to check these things out

Someone commenting online reported it might be reopened a few minutes ago.

It's reopened now. I would love to see what this "suspicious" item looked like. I hope it was legitimately troublesome looking. Otherwise, we might be too paranoid for our own good.

Yup, the highway has been reopened.
The suspicious item was a piece of soft-sided luggage that proved to contain...stuffed animals and trash.

Some hoarder is going to be very disappointed when he/she gets to his/her vacation destination and finds out that their cache of trash is missing.

was a combined 8 miles of highway a little overkill to shut down?

Don't they use animal carcasses in Iraq and Afghanistan in which to hide roadside bombs?

Our highways are littered with deer carcasses.....a traffic jam for every deer that didn't make it????

Heard the highway was closed down for political revenge, something about a town not supporting the bear hunt????

Actually, it's a classic case of "Damned if you do, damned if you don't".

In the admittedly unlikely scenario of that suitcase exploding and taking vehicles and people with it, the hue and cry of "government incompetence"--and the resulting lawsuits for damages--would have been mind-boggling and budget-busting.

On the other hand, when it is shown that the possible hazard was not a hazard at all, then the-powers-that-be are criticized for taking precautions.

Think about it...If you were in charge of The NJSP, would you be willing to automatically assume that the mysterious suitcase on the side of the road presented no dangers whatsoever? If it turned out that you were wrong, would you be prepared for the criticism and the lawsuits?

As I said, it is a classic, "Damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation, which means that you can't make everyone happy.

Yes. Seeing as the road is full of crap. Shut down the highway for every piece of trash which could harbor a bomb, ranging from tires to bumpers to suitcases to furniture, and the road will never be open.[/quote]
