I'm planning to rent in Journal Square and commute from New York University to Journal Square. I notice most of reasonable rents are with in 1 KM ( 0.6 mile) from PATH station.
I came from country where weather is good and hence 0.6 mile walking is not an issue. But I wonder how it feels when temperature, let' say, around -2 C (28 F). So I dont know if it's easy to walk this distance at that temperature.
Moreover, I dont know if the whole commuting distance is reasonable:
800 Meters walking distance from NYU to PATH station.
21 minutes in PATH train.
Around 800 meters walking distance from PATH station to apartment.
You just need to invest in decent cold weather clothes. Get a good commuter coat and some "long johns" (long underwear to wear under your pants).
We moved here from Texas and my husband grew up in a tropical country where it's never cold--he walks to public transport and then to his office in Manhattan every single day and is fine. You'll be fine! Everyone here walks in every weather--we take our baby out pretty much every day, even in super cold weather. We just dress her appropriately.

It might be one of those things that only locals know. Google jc jitney. They're supposed to run much more frequently than nj transit buses, at least what I have read here in city data
