My wife and I are entering that time of life when my second child will start college next year and allow us the ability to look for a place to live not tied to a school system. Our current abode in Fair Haven, NJ is too expensive. We would like a place accessible to NYC (not for work) that is not more than 60mi +/- out.

We are in pursuit of our "oasis" - a little more of a rural feel ie. not looking at our neighbor out our side window 20 feet away - a bit more of a sequestered feeling but not out in the boondocks.

Any ideas?

How about PA? Might be a bit over 60 miles to NYC but also consider lower taxes and cheaper real estate than NJ.

Warren County is lovely! Allamuchy, Frelinghusen, Independence, Mansfield and Liberty Twps. would be my top suggestions for rural and beautiful. If you are looking for a little more "life' you could try Hackettstown, Washington or Belvidere.

Delaware. If you like the beach check out Lewes. If you don't like the beach just find another spot.

Easton to NYC is a little over the 60 mile radius. Telling them to move 180 miles away is a bit of a haul. You'll find nice places in Western Massachusetts as well, but that seems a bit far for the original poster.
