Where are you coming from? Ohio
Why are you moving? NJ
Where will you be working ? If NYC, what part of NYC? Near Newport Mall - Jersey City (mostly), Park Ave-NYC (less) and Piscataway (less)

Will you buy or rent? Considering rent to begin with, will consider buying later
What is your budget ? $1500 to $1700
What kind of place are you looking for ? Good Elementary & better access to public transit. I understand it's hard to find parking at train station, so walkable?

Will anyone (spouse, children, pets) be moving with you ? Spouse and 6 year old
Do you need/want good public schools? Yes

Briefly describe the kind of neighborhood you'd like to live in: Families with young children
(examples: families with young children, young, mature, artsy, diverse, safe, close-knit, block parties, etc)

List three things that are important to you in order of importance.(examples: nightlife, outdoor activities, rural/urban, safety, downtown area, charming, new construction, proximity to XYZ, family oriented, easy parking, short commute, etc)
- Commute, schools and family oriented

Others:
My spouse might start working in IT field, she doesn't today. So we aren't sure where her work commute will be.

I would look at Essex and Union county. That location puts you with a little easier access to Piscataway without loosing commute time. What would your house budget be. Ideally you want to buy in the same town and neighborhood you are renting in especially with kids in school.

You may want to look at towns that have NJ Transit trains that go into Hoboken. Hoboken (as opposed to Newark) is a smaller & easier to navigate terminal. From Hoboken terminal you can easily hop on the Light Rail (HBLR) one stop to Newport, or hop on the PATH train one stop to Newport. Train schedules at New Jersey Transit - Home
Welcome to New Jersey.

I was going to suggest Rutherford for that very reason except that the trip to Piscataway is then a problem. However, since that's the place the OP has to travel to the least, maybe it would work out and on the Piscataway days, the OP just needs an extra cup of coffee to deal with Parkway or Turnpike traffic.

Thanks for suggestions. We are thinking about Woodbridge, Edison, and around that. Yes, travel to New Port will be a priority

For home prices, looking around $300 to $350K. Would be renting an apartment to start with. From what I see, they are around $1700 to $2000 per month + utilities for a two bedroom.
