Curious what everyone's favorite public beach is in NJ and why. Been going to the beach more this year than any other summer and I end up trying new places out every time.
This weekend we tried out Ideal Beach in Middletown and then went up to Keansburg. It was around 9am and both were ghost towns! We heard they were free and wanted to try them out but I guess free means no lifeguards and no bathrooms? Or did we go too early?

You do realize that you went to beaches on the bay, not the ocean, don't you? I don't know of any bay beaches with lifeguards and bathrooms. If there are, maybe someone else can point them out.
My favorite beach is West End in Long Branch. It's not free--$5 weekdays, $7 on weekends, different prices for kids and free for seniors over 62. However, that beach has been closed this year because of the reconstruction of the boardwalk, so I go to South Bath Avenue beach instead. I buy a season pass.
Lots of people with kids like the Monmouth County Park system beach called Seven Presidents. Long Branch is one of the first towns on the ocean coast, so it's not much further down from where you went.
Island state beach park , I love love love that beach. It has a section that has a lifeguard but there are also sections with no life guards and I love that you can BBQ on the beach!!

There are a few bay beaches on LBI with Porta Potty, but they're not free. In Southern New Jersey, the free beaches are Wildwood, Strathmere and Atlantic City.

Of course I realize that, but they do have bathrooms they are just locked. I was wondering if this is a normal thing or maybe we were just there too early. Do people really not use those beautiful beaches anymore?

I would think they do! I didn't know they had bathrooms there. I haven't been to any of those beaches. Hmm. I'm sure the locals use them.
We visit Keansburg but never have used the beaches there - there are bathrooms on the 'boardwalk' area but the rides do not open until 11am/12pm. So you were probably too early. Keansburg charges for parking at the meters and in the huge lot but the beaches are technically free. There is also Union Beach on the bay that we really like - there are port-a-john's there but no formal bathrooms, so if you go there be prepared. We bring a couple gallon jugs of water to rinse the kids feet........
The Bay Beach in Ship Bottom/LBI is free and has Life Guards - I think there is a bathroom too; but not 100% sure. We didn't have our beach badges when we were there and no one asked to see them.
