Are you a woman? There are a few women's only apartment complexes in NYC which have much lower rent and often offer rent based upon your income rather than a flat rate. They usually include a cleaning service and food in the price, but they have several restrictions such as curfews and no men permitted in the rooms. Still, it may be a better option for at least the short term.

One of my nieces lived at the Webster last summer while doing an internship in NYC. She was very happy with living there although yes, there are restrictions to ensure safety. A lot of professional women utilize these types of housing when moving from one city to another as temporary housing.
