Hi,
I've just moved to the US and am looking for my first apartment here. We're a young family (kid's just turned 2) so not worried about schooling for now.
I've been looking at apartments around and have just visited Avalon, Bloomfield and The Green in Bloomfield. I liked both of them and they are well within my budget. And walking around the area today afternoon didn't ring any alarm bells.
However, I'm not too sure of how safe the area actually is? Google search is not coming out too positive with a lot of people recommending the area north of the town, specially around Brookdale park. But couldn't' too many opinions of this particular part of the town?
Anyone who's lived here or has any idea of how liveable this place is? Any opinions of these two Apartment complexes? And lastly, any idea of how the child care/day care options are around here?

Well, that area right now is about 35F.

I can't say I seen crime here, but then again I understand the map below, and act accordingly...

In NJ car is important, so Avalon and The Green in Bloomfield both have parking, with some attempt ta security. There is an access to highway and train for NY. In NJ most parks are closed after dark anyway. I mean you see shady characters here and there.

I would pick The Green over Avalon, proximity to trains and windows pointing into buildings across the street.

Well an important question is where are you moving from? Bloomfield was a very nice town years ago then Newark was burnt to ground in the 70's and white flight took place. Bloomfield being the town next door slowly declined. Personally im indifferent on the town, its not horrible but its also near Newark which isnt good. Id say it probably is based on a street by street basis there.

Day care you probably want to see if you can get into the Education Station by the train station, that place is great.

The area around Bloomfield College is nice judging by what I have seen driving around there. People also seem to like the Brookdale neighborhood. The downtown area along Bloomfield Ave. is still quite gritty, and the area near the East Orange border isn't very nice either.
