Does anyone else think it is wrong that that a Jersey team like the Devils have no access to fans in South Jersey?? I understand that NY stations can't broadcast in the Philly market and vice versa, but why couldn't there be a NJ Sports Network? It can cover the Devils, Nets, Rutgers, etc...
This topic fires me up. Honestly, the label "New Jersey" in the Devils isn't even fair to say. They are the North Jersey Devils. I just think the whole thing is a missed opportunity for more state pride.

Wrong? Sure. But its more a matter of buying distribution rights to the market - I would assume noone has, because otherwise it would be possible.

Think of ESPN. When an event is going on that is provided by a local station, you end up in a blackout on ESPN, because the local station has secured local distribution rights. By the same right, a Philly station could license south jersey distribution, and it wouldn't interfere at all with the NY market. So I guess I'm saying call your local providers and ask for devils/nets/etc coverage.

not quite right, When the NJ devils moved to NJ they had to pay off the rangers, islanders and flyers for encroaching on their territory, in the NY area part of the deal was TV access.
the flyers control the rights in the philadelphia region and will not allow the devils home games to be shown in their territory.
So the fix isn't as simple as a local station buying the rights to show the games, unless the flyers agree to more encroachment by the devils into their market things will not change, and more than likely the flyers would never allow this to happen. It is essentially the same thing for every major league sport, teams control their home market and other teams cannot encroach those areas.

I have an idea. Build an 18,000 arena in Monmouth/Ocean County. Somewhere around exit 105. Have the Devils and Nets play there. That's the base. Not Bergen or Camden Counties. These areas are affiliated with the big cities.

Absolutely correct.
It is not about the "name" as much it is about the $$$.

1. the people in those places do not want a sports arena in their area
2. moving the devils south would not change anything regarding TV rights, the flyers would still control the philadelphia market and will not allow that to change.
3. the nets are moving to brooklyn and would not consider changing their plans

The Devils reside in north Jersey. Their main fan base is Morris/Sussex/Essex/Passaic. It is 2 different markets I dont care what the Devils had to pay the Flyers. That was BS. There are very few Flyers fans in North Jersey and that team has alot more of a following than the Devils. So how many devils fans are there in South Jersey? Id say about 20.

How far off can you be?
So, in other words the Devils main fan base is just four counties in NJ?!?!?!

21 if you include me. I think South Jersey might have a little more swing if the Devils could broadcast there. Still, the overwhelming majority will cheer for the team closest to them.
In some ways, I feel the whole franchise was kind of a big failure. Why would you want to squeeze into such a small niche of the market....basically 3/4 of North Jersey (giving the other 1/4 to the Rangers)?? ...and how could the NHL allow THREE teams in the NY market?!
I'm still calling shenanigans on the Flyers for not letting people have their pick here.... are they afraid of something? Why did the Rangers allow another team into their market??
