I have never understood why this guy is so popular.
It's the connection he makes with people. He's not a great voice; in fact, sometimes he mumbles and he's often somewhat off-key. His band is great--all of them, sax, keyboard, drummer, guitars. He gets good backup singers.
There's some magnificent poetry in a lot of his lyrics and what he sings about often resonates. His concerts make you feel as if you're hanging out with a band made up of a bunch of guys you know.
A couple of years ago, my mid-20s daughter, whose musical tastes do not generally include any sort of classic rock, called me to tell me that a friend had called her at the last minute the night before because he had concert tickets. It was Bruce Springsteen, and she said she had a good time and that he put on a good show. That's pretty much what he does.
My S.O. is a Canuck and an old 60's hippie to whom music is everything. He saw a lot of concerts in his time, and he says his No. 1 and 2 are Bruce.
Anyway. He is who he is and he's not anybody else, and that goes a long way.
