There's a HUGE Portuguese population in newark in the Ironbound section, if you stay there you should be fine. Penn Station is nearby and of course plenty of restaurants.

There is a great Portiugese restraunt there also Bob Grant on WABC used to promote it all the time for the life of me I cant recall the name. I agree they should be fine there in that section. The op cant go to far w/o a car.
There's Spanish Sangria, or Iberias or Spanish Palace and on and on...plenty of great food there <sigh> I remember during my teenage years I worked for a portuguese bakery off ferry st, loved going there during the Portuguese festival which btw is coming up next month.
